Playing in leaves is the best part of fall photo sessions, and these guys did it beautifully! This session was one of my fall mini sessions, with a family I have worked with for a few years now. It was wonderful to see all the kids getting bigger, and developing their different personalities.
This is the type of photography that speaks to me. It is lifestyle photography--somewhere between portraiture and photo-journalism, and it feels authentic to me. I know what it is like to look at posed and stiff pictures of my babies vs. authentic amazing moment pictures of them, and the authentic pictures are more meaningful to me. They remind me of details I had forgotten, and tiny voices that are gone. Authentic photographs take us back to a time and age that we thought we would never forget!
During family photo sessions I usually set up more of a portrait type photo, and after we get that shot we move from there. At this session we got a great family portrait on the blanket, and then we played in the leaves and got silly. We "explored," and moved to another area in the park for another portrait, and then we sang songs and acted silly some more. We had fun, and got some great photos.
I do not put a time limit on family photo sessions--usually I let the kids decide when they are done with me. Having an activity planned is a great way to make the session fun. This could be anything from a picnic, to drawing with sidewalk chalk to playing soccer. Whatever your family is into. When everyone is having fun we will get amazing, authentic photos!
