I photographed this sweet little guy when he was two weeks old, and I can't believe that it has already been two months since he joined us. He already looks so different than he did at first, which is why I love to capture newborns in the first couple of weeks. I think that there is a sweet spot for newborn photos--I like to wait for them to "wake up" a little, but not so long that they no longer look like newborns. I find that to be around two-three weeks old.
This is a different approach than some other newborn photographers take, because of a big style difference. For photographers who pose newborns in very cute but cheesy ways (head on hands, baby in basket type of shots), it is important that they photograph the baby in the first 7-10 days. Babies this young are usually so sleepy that you can really mess with them and manipulate them without waking them up. I am only interested in natural, simple photos of newborns. I think they are perfect just the way they are! So while I am happy to schedule a newborn session in the first week of life, I prefer to wait just a bit. I want to tell a family's story and include the newest member in an honest way--yawns and funny faces included!
