Oh, baby Elwood. This cutie is one of my doula babies, and he is just so yummy!! We had so many great shots, it was hard to pick out a few to share!

I arrived for our lifestyle newborn photo session when Elwood was two weeks old. I like scheduling newborn sessions for around this age for a few reasons.  Babies are still in the "newborn" stage, but it gives a family a chance to settle in a bit.

Many photographers try to photograph newborns in the first 10 days of life, while they are still super sleepy. This is so they can pose baby easily. Because I do not do any unnatural posing, I do not need to photograph newborns right away. I used to schedule in the first 10 days, but have found that I prefer to wait a little. Waiting until baby is bewteen 2-3 weeks old works better with my style of photography.

My newborn sessions are lifestyle photography sessions. To me this means somewhere between photo-journalism (fly on the wall) and portraiture (posed). It means photographing the whole family, including a family's pets and home. A newborn session for me is about the newest member of a family, and I want to document the whole family in that moment in their journey. I want to capture authentic moments--pictures of moments that are genuine. I think this type of photography will be more appreciated later on!

As with life with a newborn in general, we follow the baby's lead during a newborn session. I'm not in a rush, and expect to take many feeding breaks. Having a newborn at home can be overwhelming, and I don't want to add to the stress. I want everyone involved to relax and enjoy the time we spend together!
