I love telling stories, and especially family stories. Telling the story of the day a baby is born is extra special, as it's a moment in the life of a family that transforms that family into something different than before. But there is something missing to the story when you only include that day. That's why I love it when a family chooses me to document before and after with a maternity session and then a newborn session.
When I am also the family's birth doula, I get the added bonus of getting to know a them better at our photography sessions.
Last month this awesome family of three transformed into a family of four. It happened very differently than they had planned on; they shifted their birth from the Atlanta Birth Center to an induction at Atlanta Medical Center, but they remained open to what was the best choice for them. The Midwives of the birth center stayed with them during the process, and the nurses at Atlanta Medical were incredibly supportive and loving.
I am so grateful that this family gave me permission to share their story. Enjoy!
The birth of Eloise:
Earlier this year I joined forces with two other Doula Photographer friends to create a Collective of Doulas and Photographers. We call oursleves The Birth Story Collective.
For years we had all been attending births on our own, and relying on each other for back up support. This type of back up support is essential due to the nature of birth, and we appreciated each other immensely. But something was missing. We each struggled with being constantly "on-call" for clients, and having to turn clients away because we didn't want too many potential overlaps. We also were not getting the professional and creative support that we craved from coworkers, and the idea of sending a stranger to a client's birth if we were sick or at another birth was less than ideal.
With the goal of fostering community over competition, we created The Birth Story Collective. Each one of us offers family photography like maternity and newborn sessions through our separate businesses, but for births and hours old sessions we are hired as a group and we use a shared call system. This way our clients know that they have met with and are comfortable with the doula and or photographer that arrives at their birth or hours old session.
I am so excited to be a part of this amazing group. It's a dream come true!
